Swiss Regulator Investigates Google Over Android Default Search Feature

Switzerland’s Competition Commission has launched a preliminary investigation into Google’s Android default search settings over potential competition concerns.

Swiss competition authorities have launched a preliminary investigation into Google’s Android search practices, examining whether the company’s removal of the “Choice Screen” feature in Switzerland has unfairly limited competition in the country’s digital search market.

The investigation has been initiated by Switzerland’s Competition Commission (COMCO), which is assessing Google’s decision to remove the feature that allows Android users to choose their preferred default search engine during the initial setup of a new device. While the option remains available in countries within the European Economic Area (EEA), Swiss users are automatically assigned Google Search as the default without being presented with alternative search engine choices.

According to COMCO, default settings play a critical role in digital markets because they can significantly influence consumer behavior and the visibility of competing services. The regulator believes removing the “Choice Screen” could reduce the visibility of rival search engines and create additional barriers for competitors seeking to enter or expand within the Swiss market.

The Swiss authority will determine whether Google’s practice constitutes an unlawful restriction of competition under the country’s Cartel Act. The outcome of the investigation could also influence how regulators assess default settings and competition practices on other mobile platforms in the future. Google has acknowledged the investigation and stated that it will cooperate fully with Swiss authorities as they review the matter. The company has not commented further on why the feature was removed for users in Switzerland.

The latest probe adds to the growing global regulatory scrutiny surrounding Google’s search and Android business practices. Competition authorities in multiple jurisdictions have increasingly examined how default search settings, pre-installed applications, and platform policies affect consumer choice and market competition in the digital economy.
