Protect Your WhatsApp: PTA Shares Safety Advisory

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority has advised WhatsApp users to protect their accounts by enabling two-step verification and avoiding phishing scams.

PTA issues cybersecurity advisory for WhatsApp users in Pakistan

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has issued an important advisory for WhatsApp users across Pakistan, urging the public to remain vigilant against the growing threat of online scams, phishing attempts, and unauthorized account access.

According to the advisory, cybercriminals are increasingly using fake messages, fraudulent verification requests, and deceptive links to compromise WhatsApp accounts and steal personal information. The telecom regulator has advised users to exercise caution before responding to unknown contacts or sharing sensitive information.

PTA has emphasized that users should never share their six-digit WhatsApp verification code, one-time passwords (OTPs), or personal credentials with anyone. The authority also recommends enabling two-step verification, using strong security settings, and regularly updating the WhatsApp application to the latest version.

The advisory further encourages users to verify suspicious messages independently and avoid clicking on unknown links that claim prizes, financial rewards, or urgent account verification requests. Such scams are commonly used to gain unauthorized access to user accounts or install malicious software.

As cyber threats continue to evolve, PTA has reiterated the importance of digital awareness and responsible online behavior. The authority encourages users who encounter suspicious activity or cyber fraud to report such incidents through the appropriate cybersecurity channels.

The latest advisory reflects Pakistan’s ongoing efforts to strengthen cybersecurity awareness and promote safer digital practices as millions of citizens rely on messaging platforms for personal and professional communication.
